Three black women will be honoured in Kitchener on Thursday for their lifetime of service combating racism and discrimination.

But all three women — retired teachers Marcia Smellie and Chloe Callender, and retired nurse Lauris DaCosta — all said that part of them will be in Ferguson, Mo.

That city is engulfed in fires, riots and looting as the African-American community expresses its grief and anger that charges won’t be laid against a white police officer who shot and killed black teenager Michael Brown.
